application requirements

Knight Errant is open to creators of all skill levels. There is no strict or extensive portfolio requirement—we aim to keep the application process accessible while still allowing applicants to showcase their strengths. Above all, we value passion, creativity, and alignment with the zine’s vision.

Below are the general portfolio guidelines for each role:

( I ) WRITERS     Please submit two (2) writing samples, each between 1,000–4,000 words. We recommend that at least one (1) sample be for My S-Class Hunters, but this is not required.

(.) Samples may be excerpts from longer works; however, at least one piece must be complete and able to stand alone

(.) Either SFW writing, NSFW writing, or a combination of both types are acceptable for portfolio purposes.

( II ) PAGE ARTISTS     Please submit two (2) examples of your work. We recommend that at least one (1) piece be for My S-Class Hunters, but this is not required.

(.) WIPs and sketches are allowed; however, at least one piece should be fully finished (preferably fully rendered)

(.) Samples should reflect the style you intend to contribute to the zine.

( III ) COMIC ARTISTS     Please submit one (1) comic sample.

(.) Samples may be in black & white or full color

(.) WIPs are acceptable, though at least one finished piece is strongly encouraged

(.) Submissions should demonstrate your ability to convey storytelling through sequential art.

( IV ) SPOT ARTISTS     Please submit two (2) examples of your work. We recommend that at least one (1) piece be for My S-Class Hunters, but this is not required.

(.) WIPs are allowed; however, at least one piece should be fully finished

(.) Spot art may include smaller illustrations; mock-ups that incorporate text or layout elements are encouraged.

( V ) MERCH ARTISTS     Please submit at least one (1) example of your work.

(.) At least one piece should be a merch design (e.g., sticker, charm, print, etc.)

(.) Submissions may include mock-ups and/or finished products

(.) As this is a digital zine, physical production is not required; design concepts are sufficient.

WRITERS     Are expected to contribute one (1) SFW, gen-focused piece of fiction between 2,000–4,000 words.

(.) May opt to create additional NSFW pieces of 2,500+ words for the digital add-on zine

PAGE ARTISTS     Are expected to contribute one (1) SFW fully rendered illustration (single page or spread).

(.) Pieces should reflect the romance fantasy theme through setting, costume, or composition.

(.) May opt to create additional NSFW illustrations (single page/spread) for the digital add-on zine

(.) May also opt to contribute one (1) additional SFW single-page render for use as prints or promotional materials

COMIC ARTISTS     Are expected to contribute one (1) SFW comic (color or black & white) of 3–5 pages.

(.) Comics should remain within general audience guidelines while showcasing strong visual storytelling

(.) May opt to create additional NSFW comics of 3+ pages for the digital add-on zine

(.) Spot art may range from thumbnail to half-page size

(.) May opt to create additional sets of at least two (2) pieces for NSFW written works in the digital add-on zine

frequently asked questions

( I ) What is a fanzine?     A fanzine is an unofficial, fan-created anthology that brings together a curated collection of artwork, writing, and other creative works inspired by a shared source or theme. This project is centered on a rofan interpretation of the My S-Class Hunters universe, encouraging transformative works that explore alternate settings.

( II ) What type of content will be featured?     This zine is designed to highlight the breadth of the community’s creativity within a gen (general audience) framework. As such:

The main zine will be strictly safe for work, gen, and non-explicit.

Canon-adjacent levels of affection are welcome, as long as all content remains appropriate for a general audience and does not focus on romantic relationships.

We welcome alternate universes (AUs), focusing on rofan reinterpretations of canon characters and their circumstances.

A separate NSFW add-on may be produced as an optional, clearly labeled component. This content will be restricted to 18+ contributors and audiences and will not be included in the main zine.

( III ) What exactly is "rofan"?     Rofan is a genre and aesthetic inspired by Korean webnovels and manhwa that focuses on elegant fantasy settings—think nobility, balls, politics, and magic—often paired with dramatic character roles like (northern) dukes, royalty, and potential regresser/transmigrater/reincarnator protagonists.

( IV ) Do I need prior zine experience to apply?     No prior experience is required. Applicants will be evaluated solely on the quality of their submitted works.

( V ) Can I apply for multiple roles?     Yes, applicants may apply for more than one role. However, it is very likely that final selections will be limited to one role per contributor to ensure a balanced project structure.

( VI ) Do I need Discord?     Yes. Discord will serve as the primary communication platform for updates and coordination.

If you are unable to use Discord (e.g. banned in your country), you must contact the Head Moderator during the application stage to request an exception and arrange an alternative communication method.

( VII ) Will this zine be physical or digital?     This project will be a fully digital zine, with all content distributed electronically.

( VIII ) If the zine is digital, how will merch work?     As a digital project, “merch” will take the form of downloadable bonus content, which may include:
(.) Printables
(.) Coloring pages or line art
(.) Wallpapers (mobile and desktop)
(.) Original music or audio tracks
(.) Small interactive or downloadable experiences (e.g., simple games or themed assets)

Final offerings will depend on contributor interest and project scope.

( IX ) Is this zine for profit?     No. This is a for-charity zine. Proceeds will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the moderation team and/or contributors.

( X ) How will contributors be compensated?     All contributors will receive, at minimum, free access to the complete digital zine bundle.

As this is a not-for-profit project, no monetary compensation will be provided.

( XI ) Will there be pinch hitters?     Yes. Pinch hitters (backup contributors) will be selected during the application process and may be contacted if needed.

( XII ) Will contributors be allowed to collaborate?     Yes. Certain contributors are welcome to collaborate across roles, such as writers working with spot artists, provided all parties communicate clearly and meet deadlines.

( XIII ) How many contributors will be accepted?     We anticipate approximately 40–50 contributors, including artists and writers. Final numbers may vary.

( XIV ) What is the creation process like?
After acceptance:
(.) Contributors will submit 2–4 pitches for review
(.) Approved concepts will move into production
(.) There will be regular (typically monthly) check-ins
(.) Final works must be completed within the project timeline

( XV ) Can I post my work before release?    No. Contributors are asked to refrain from posting full works publicly until after the official release.

After a period of four months after the zine has been published, creators are welcome to share their work with proper credit.

( XVI ) What conduct is expected of contributors?    All participants are expected to engage with one another respectfully and professionally.

We aim to foster a collaborative, inclusive environment that supports creators and their interpretations.
